Glenwood Tree Company Services

We will always come round to look at the work, give you our advice and provide a free quotation. Should you accept our quote and your tree has a TPO we will apply to your local council, to request permission to work on the tree. This service is carried out free of charge. Below are some of the services we offer.
Tree Pruning
Crown Reduction
Crown reduction reduces a tree’s crown and is used to reduce the height and/or spread of the crown of a tree by the removal of the ends of branches while still maintaining its natural shape. This technique can be used to: reduce wind resistance, to reduce water up-take, to control the size of a tree in a restricted environment or to allow more light through.
Crown Lifting
Crown lifting is the selective removal of the lower branches of a trees crown to increase the distance between the base of the canopy and ground level. This type of pruning should, if possible be carried out before a tree reaches maturity in order to avoid large wounds.
Crown Thinning
This involves the selective removal of some secondary branch and stem growth to create a less dense crown. Crown thinning is sometimes recommended to increase light, however, the European Standard advises a maximum of 15%. if there are complaints about a tree blocking the light, but is often unsuccessful because the amount of branch wood we remove without harming the tree is minimal. Work can also be carried out to create a more balanced crown as the weight on the limbs is lifted and the tree’s natural shape returned.
Dead Wooding
Dead wooding is the safe removal of any the dead wood from the tree, this is to stop the hazard of them falling on to buildings, vehicles or the public etc.
Crown Cleaning
This involves removing dead or diseased branches. Crown cleaning will only be carried out where there is a real possibility of falling branches causing accidents or injury, or if diseased branches threaten the tree’s health. Dead wood has immense ecological value and is not normally removed from trees which are away from very public areas eg quiet areas of parks or woodlands.
Pollarding
Started early in a tree’s life branches are pruned back to the same point on a regular basis to form ‘pollard heads’ which store energy. Pollarding should be carried out at intervals of between one and five years.
Pollarding is not necessary or appropriate if trees:
- Have enough space to develop naturally;
- Have not been pollarded for over five years to allow them to grow on;
- Are older trees and have not been previously managed as pollards.
Coppicing
A method of woodland management and harvesting, beneficial for biodiversity, in which young tree stems are cut down to near ground level. Birch can be coppiced on a 4 year cycle, whereas oak needs to be a 50 year cycle, for poles or firewood. A regularly coppiced tree will never die of old age - some coppiced stools may therefore reach immense ages.
Hedge Pruning
If you have an over-grown hedge of any size we can get them into shape. By reducing the height, width or just clipping we will create a neat and tidy form.
Stump Removal
One of the most effective methods of stump removal. After, all of the arisings can then be back-filled with top soil to allow replacement of turf or hard landscaping.
Planting
From one specimen tree or a whole woodland, we offer a comprehensive planting service. The Glenwood Tree Company can assist you with selection, advise upon suitability of species for soil conditions and location and supply and plant trees of all sizes.
We also make all arrangements for ceremonial plantings, tree replacements, commemorative planting or even as a surprise gift.
On request we can source most trees, regardless of size.
Root Pruning
Occasionally, tree roots can damage footpaths and pavements. In these cases we can prune the roots. However, if root pruning is likely to threaten the tree’s health or stability, felling may be the only alternative
Tree Lights / Tree Illumination
Spot lighting a single or group of trees will enhance a trees shape and silhouette at night and give your garden a certain soft relaxed atmosphere.
Surveys
We are able to undertake woodland surveys, and general health of tree survey
Emergency Service
We provide a 24-hour emergency service to clean up any work that required immediate attention.
